Geotargeting Factors of Organic Ranking
Search Engines generally uses the several elements to determine the Geo-Targeted location of a particular website (or a part of a website) in Organic Results of SERP (Search Engine Result Page). These elements which help Google to determine the location of a website is known as Geotargeting Factors. Following are the most effective elements are listed:
- Domain Name: Domain name explicitly specifies targeted country.
- Social Media: Your social media accounts and activities.
- Local Listings: Classified listings and business listings.
- Links: Your inbound Links (backlinks) and outbound Links.
- Metadata: Meta Geo Tag.
- Language: Your website’s language.
- Server Location: At last server location. Search engines give preferences to your server location in geo-targeting.
Geotargeting Practices and strategy for better SEO
Keeping the above Geo-Targeting factors in mind, we can create our own strategies to Geo-Target our website in search engines. For better result you can follow my strategy.
Strategy 1: Focus on your domain
Use ccTLD – Country Level Domain Name: Domain name extensions such as(.us, .ca, .in, .au etc) is generally a strong signal for Search engines since it explicitly specifies single country code.
The table given below will explain how geotargeting strategy works for a domain name extension.
Download this table in HD quality.
Use Webmaster Tools: If you are using global domain name extension, then you can target the geographical location of your website, using Webmaster Tools – provided by the search engines. Keep in mind, the domain name is a very important geotargeting factor.
Strategie 2: Host your domain, where it belongs
Always prefer the local server to host your domain. It helps to increase response time between server and user. This response time is also known as ping. Remember lower the ping, better is the response time.
Plus search engines like google gives special preferences to your hosting server in geo-targeting. For better geotargeting results you should always host your website files in local hosting server.
If you are unable to change the hosting server of your website due to any reason. Then try focusing on other strategies. If your other factors are strong, then hosting can be overlooked.
Strategie 3: Optimize your website
Add Geo meta and Language meta tag to your website. It helps search engines to determine your websites geo-targeted location.
